It can be annoying when you get a lot of notifications because it is difficult to find the most important notification from the big list of notifications. In this article we will be showing you how to sort notifications on your iPhone or iPad so that you can easily find the notification that you are looking for.
Sort Notifications on iPhone & iPad
Usually by default all notifications you receive on your iPhone or iPad are displayed by the order in which they were received, which means that the notification that you have most recently received will appear above all other notifications.
This way of arranging notifications can make important notifications appear way below unimportant ones, forcing you to look through all your notifications.
Luckily there is a way to sort notifications efficiently and make it easy to go through your notifications in a short time. The method of sorting notifications on your iPhone that we are proposing involves the following steps.
- Group notifications by App
- Rearrange grouped notifications
1. Group Notifications by App
First, follow the steps below to sort notifications on your iPhone by app.
1. Tap on Settings
On your iPhone or iPad open up Settings.
2. Tap on Notifications
Once in Settings locate Notifications and tap on it. (See image in Step 3 below)
3. Toggle on Group by App
Once inside the Notifications settings toggle on the Group by App option. (See image below)
Once you have toggled on the group by app option your notifications will appear under the app’s name. For example all notifications from Messages app will appear under the heading Messages and all notifications from NHL app will appear under the heading NHL.
Note: In case you do not see the Group by App option on your iPhone, tap on Sort Order and select Recent from the list. This will reveal Group by App option and you will be able to follow the steps to Group notifications by app.
2. Rearrange Grouped Notifications
Even though you have grouped the notifications by App in the first step, they will still be arranged by the order in which they were received. For example if you received a Facebook notification before a phone call then the Facebook notification will still appear first on your iPhone.
This happens due to iPhone’s default preference for arranging notifications by the order in which they were received. You will need to follow the steps below to reorder notifications.
1. Open Settings > Notifications
Once again open up Settings and then tap on Notifications.
2. Tap on Sort Order choose Manual
Next tap on Sort Order and then choose Manual from the list. (See image below)
3. Rearrange Apps
Once you have selected Manual you will see a list of all your apps that you are receiving notifications from.
You can now rearrange these apps by dragging them to any position you would like to see. For example if you would like to see notifications from Facebook Messenger first, simply drag Facebook Messenger to the top of the list and you will see notifications from Facebook Messenger at the top.
Back to Default settings
Follow the steps below in case you do not like your notifications to be sorted by app and would like to get back to the iPhone’s default option of sorting notifications by the order in which they were received.
1. Open Settings and tap on Notifications
Open up Settings on you iPhone or iPad and then tap on Notifications.
2. Tap on Sort Order
Next tap on Sort Order and then select Recent from the list.
3. Toggle off Group by App
Now you should be seeing the Group by App option, toggle this option off and your notifications should now be sorted according to the time they were received.
