“This Device is Disabled. (Code 22)” error appears on a Windows computer due to a hardware device being disabled.
This usually happens if a Hardware device becomes incompatible due to missing device drivers, driver corruption or other reasons.
Most device driver errors are almost always reported as “This device is disabled. (Code 22)” and you should be able to fix them using any of the following methods.
1. Restart Computer
Starting with a simple fix, simply Restart your computer and see if this helps in fixing the issue.
This fix can help, if the problem is due to your computer failing to load the right driver required for a certain hardware component on your computer.
2. Enable the Device
Follow the steps below to identify the disabled device on your computer and manually enable this Device.
1. Right-click on the Start button and click on Device Manager.
2. On Device Manager screen, right-click on the problematic Device (Webcam in this case) and select Enable Device option.
Repeat the above steps to enable other disabled devices (if required).
3. Update Device Driver
Sometimes, the problem is caused due to the driver software becoming outdated.
1. Right-click on the Start button and click on Device Manager.
2. On Device Manager screen, right-click on the Device causing problems and select Update Driver option.
3. On the next screen, select Search automatically for driver software option.
4. Follow the onscreen instructions to update the driver.
4. Uninstall & Reinstall Device Drivers
If a USB device is causing problems, you may find it listed as Unknown Device under “Universal Serial Bus controllers” entry.
1. Right-click on the Start button and click on Device Manager.
2. On Device Manager screen, right-click on Unknown Device and click on Uninstall Device option.
3. After the Device is Uninstalled, Restart your computer.
4. After the Restart, open Device Manager > right-click on the Action tab and click on Scan for hardware changes.
Once the computer restarts, Windows 10 should automatically install the right drivers.
Note: You may have to Uninstall every device under Universal Serial Bus controllers entry to fix the problem.
5. Use the Troubleshooter
Windows 10 comes with a built-in Troubleshooter that can fix problems with Keyboard, Audio Devices, and the Printer.
If the problem is due to any of these devices, you can trust the Troubleshooter to fix the problem.
1. Open Settings and click on Updates & Security.
2. Click on Troubleshoot in the left-pane. In the right-pane, select the required Troubleshooter and click on Run the Troubleshooter.
3. Wait for Windows to find and fix problem with the device.
