Your iPhone has a feature called “Frequent Locations” that is buried in its settings. This service is busy tracking every place that you visit and even plotting them on a map with complete addresses.
However, it is really easy to turn off Frequent Locations Tracking on iPhone and prevent your phone from keeping track of locations that you visit, in case this bothers you in any way.
Frequent Locations Tracking Service on iPhone
Before going ahead with steps to disable Frequent Location tracking on your iPhone, let us take an overview of this feature, so that you can make an informed decision on whether or not to disable Frequent Locations Tracking on your iPhone.
According to Apple, the Frequent Locations Tracking Service keeps track of places that you visit, how often and how long you visit, in order to learn about places that are important to you.
All this data is strictly kept on your device (not sent to Apple Servers) and used in improving the user experience on iPhone by providing you with personalized services, such as predictive traffic routing.
What this practically means is that with enough tracking data, your iPhone will be able to figure out where you live, where you work and go out during the weekends.
Using this information, your iPhone is able to provide you with exactly the kind of information that you might be looking for at a given point in a day.
Looking at the other side of the story, computing expert Prof Noel Sharkey has dubbed the Frequent Location tracking feature on iPhone as a Divorce Lawyer’s Dream.
Every place you go, where you shop, where you have a drink – it is all recorded. This is a divorce lawyer’s dream. – Prof Noel Sharkey
Security experts do acknowledge that Apple perhaps has the best of intention in mind. However, they have expressed concerns and doubts about how the users location data can remain confined to their devices while it is being used by other apps.
If you store the data on the device and then request a map for a road near you, you’ve clearly sent the data off the device. – Kevin Mahaffey, CTO, Lookout
