As with earlier Apple Watch models, Apple Watch Series 3 features Water Resistant Casing, Heart rate monitor and is available in the same 38mm and 42mm models.

Apart from faster processor and brighter display, the biggest upgrade to Apple Watch Series 3 is its ability to get its own cellular connection, independent of your iPhone.

This allows Apple Watch Series 3 to receive phone calls and notifications, even when your iPhone is placed away at your Home.

Shape, Size and Casing

Apple Watch Series 3 is similar to earlier versions of Apple Watch with a square display covering a glass screen, which mainly indicates time and display notifications.

As mentioned above, Apple Watch Series 3 is available in two sizes (38.6 x 33.33 mm and 42.5 x 36.4 mm).

Both GPS and (GPS + Cellular) models of Apple Watch Series 3 are available in Aluminum and Stainless Steel casing.

As you can see in above specs table, Aluminum casing models are much lighter than steel casing models.

Screen and Display

Apple Watch Series 3 has the same OLED Capacitive Touch Screen display that was introduced by Apple in Series 2.

According to Apple, the screen resolution of 38mm model works out to be 340 ppi and that of 42mm model works out to be 390 ppi.

Processor

Apple Watch Series 3 is powered by Apple’s new S3 dual-core processor, which is faster than earlier models.

The S3 processor is combined with W2 Wireless chip (not present in earlier models) to improve connectivity.

Battery Life

Apple has carried forward the same Series 2 battery in Series 3, providing you with the same 18 hours of battery life.

The Battery life is the same in both LTE and GPS Models.

Connectivity

The expensive model of Apple Watch 3 (GPS+Cellular) connects directly to cellular network, without being tethered to an iPhone over Bluetooth.

This means, you can take calls, receive messages, stream Apple Music on Apple Watch, without having your iPhone in your pocket.

The affordable model of Apple Watch 3 has a built-in GPS that allows it to accurately record distance, speed, and pace while you are walking, running, or cycling.

A notable feature of the GPS in Apple Watch 3 is that it has been designed to pick up a signal right away, so you don’t have to wait for a signal at any time.

After completion of your run or walk, you can check your iPhone to see a map of your route and where you ran the fastest.

Water Proof Design

As with earlier modes, Apple Watch 3 is rated water resistant up to 50 meters depth. This means that you can safely wear your Apple Watch while showering and swimming.

Apple Watch 2 Waterproof

You do not have to worry about water getting into the speaker, as the speaker in Apple Watch3 has been designed to let water in and then use the sound vibrations to force the water out of the speaker.

Apple Watch 3 comes pre-loaded with software to measure Swim Laps, Distance Covered and Calorie Burn in real time.

According to Apple, the software is based on analysis of over 700 swimmers for multiple years and is designed to learn from your habits and tailor its measurements.

Health Monitor and Workout App

Apple Watch Series 3 has a sensor on the back which measures your heart rate throughout the day. The data is sent to your iPhone, where you can take a look at your heart rate patterns over a period of time.

There is a native workout App on Apple Watch Series 3 that allows you to choose from 12 indoor and outdoor workouts, including swimming, biking, running, and elliptical.

Apple Watch Series 2 Health

Next, there is a Breath App that helps you to practice mindfulness and with beautiful animation and guidance for deep breathing.

In addition, Apple Watch Series 3 allows you to add third party apps that you may find useful and applicable to your health conditions.

On its website Apple suggests Third Party Apps like “One Drop” to manage diabetes, “Pocket Yoga” to help you practice Yoga and “WaterMinder” app to set your daily hydration goals.

Siri in Apple Watch

Siri in Apple Watch can be really helpful, you can ask Siri to set reminders, check weather and much more right from your Apple Watch.

Others

You can make use of the built in microphone and speaker in Apple Watch to answer incoming phone calls and reply to messages.

Apple Pay service is fully integrated into Apple Watch, allowing you to pay for goods and services in stores without having to pull out your iPhone.

While the GPS + Cellular version is available in Silver and Space Grey Aluminum case at $379.
