Restart and Force-restart iPhone

Restarting or Rebooting a device is generally the most commonly recommended troubleshooting step to fix an iPhone that is going through minor performance issues and problems.

In case you are wondering, both Restart and Reboot refer to the same process of shutting down iPhone, waiting for a few seconds and turning it back on again.

While, the process of Restarting or Rebooting iPhone is fairly simple, it varies a bit, depending on the model of your device.

In comparison, the process of Force-rebooting iPhone is a bit more complicated and also varies, depending on the model of your device.

Force-restarting is usually recommended when iPhone becomes unresponsive, refuses to shut down, gets stuck on Apple Logo or gets stuck in restart loop.

1. Restart iPhone Using Home Button

If your iPhone has a home button, you can Restart your device by using the following steps.

1. Press and Hold the Power button, until you see Slide to Power OFF screen.

2. Use the Slider to Power OFF iPhone and wait for your device to completely Power OFF.

3. After 30 seconds, press the Power Button to Restart iPhone.

When iPhone restarts, you will be required to enter your Lock screen Passcode (even if you are using Touch ID).

2. Restart Any Model of iPhone Using Settings

This method of Restarting iPhone does not make use of Home or Volume buttons. Hence, it can be used on any model of iPhone (iPhone 5 to iPhone 12 and above).

1. Go to Settings > General > scroll down and tap on Shut Down.

2. Wait for 30 seconds and restart your device by pressing the Power button.

As mentioned above, the simple process of rebooting or restarting a device has the potential to fix many problems on iPhone.

If the problem is not fixed by Restarting the device, you will have to go for a Force Restart.

3. Force-restart iPhone

The process of Force-restarting iPhone is defined by Apple and it varies, depending on the model of your device.

iPhone 6s and below: Press and hold Power and Home buttons, until you see your device starting with Apple Logo.
