How to Use Kindle Without Amazon Account

Using Kindle without Amazon account would be unthinkable for most users who buy Kindle devices in order to access Amazon’s rich ecosystem of books, music, movies, TV Shows and deals.

However, there are users who want to use Kindle eReader to read books and Fire Tablet as an Android tablet, without the need to create an Amazon account.

How Does Kindle Get Linked to Amazon Account?

As you must have experienced it, when you order a Kindle eReader or Fire Tablet from Amazon, it comes already linked to your Amazon Account; as if someone at Amazon had logged-in to your account, before packaging it for shipping.

However, this happens right before your eyes; during the ordering process; where you either ignored or did not pay attention to “Link your device to Amazon account to simplify setup” option being pre-selected.

Once you add your Kindle order to Cart with this option pre-selected, the serial number of your eReader or Fire Tablet gets linked to your Amazon Account.

Other Ways Kindle Gets Linked to Amazon Account

Even if you uncheck “Link your device to Amazon account to simplify setup” option during the online buying or purchase process, Kindle or Amazon Fire tablet can still get linked to your Amazon Account at the warehouse; when a worker scans the barcode on the box, which ends up linking the unique serial number of the device to your Amazon Account.

Another point at which both Kindle and Amazon Fire Tablet can get linked to your Amazon Account is when you connect them to your home Wi-Fi network.

As soon as they are connected to Internet, both Kindle eReaders and Fire Tablets have a default tendency to connect to Amazon servers and use the serial number of the device to automatically register themselves.

Is it Possible to Use Kindle Without Account?

The short answer to this question is a “Yes”; as it is indeed possible to use both Kindle eReader and Fire Tablet without linking them to an Amazon Account. However, this freedom comes with significant limitations; which you need to be prepared to deal with and navigate through.

The biggest limitation is that you won’t be able to download books to your Kindle eReader or download apps and games from Amazon’s App store to your Fire Tablet.

Use Kindle eReader Without Account

The first step that is required to use Kindle eReader or Fire tablet without account is to delink your device is from Amazon Account.

After delinking Kindle eReader from Amazon account, you can keep it disconected from the internet by disabling Wi-Fi or by enabling Airplane mode and upload books by connecting your device to a Windows computer or Mac.

Since, Kindle eReader supports PDF format, you will be able to upload and read books in PDF format and you can also make use of calibre to convert books in other formats to AZW (Amazon Word) format.

You can download books to Windows computer or MacBook from Open Library, Standard EBooks and other reputable sources and transfer them to Kindle eReader using a USB cable.

In the case of a Amazon Fire Tablet, you can keep it connected to the internet and Install Google Play Store on it, in order to download the required Apps and Games from Google Play Store.

Steps to Delink Kindle From Amazon Account

If your Kindle eReader or Fire Tablet has already been registered to Amazon Account, you can deregister or delink your device by going to the “Account” section in your device settings.

1. Open Settings on your Kindle or Amazon Fire and tap on My Account

2. On “My Account” screen, tap on Deregister

3. On the pop-up that appears, select the Deregister option to confirm

Once you select the Deregister option in the pop-up, you will be signed out from Amazon Account and your device will no longer be associated with your Amazon account.

As mentioned above, once your Kindle device is deregistered from Amazon, you will no longer be able to download apps from Amazon’s App Store or use stock Amazon apps.
