Fix: AirPods Keep Disconnecting from iPhone

While AirPods are designed to readily connect to iPhone and work flawlessly, the problem of AirPods getting frequently disconnected from iPhone has also been reported by users.

There could be multiple reasons for AirPods disconnecting from iPhone, ranging from the simple case of AirPods not being sufficiently charged to Bluetooth connectivity issues, glitch in proximity sensors and other reasons.

Before going ahead with other troubleshooting steps, shut down iPhone > Wait for 30 seconds and restart your device by pressing the Power button.

If AirPods are still disconnecting from iPhone, you should be able to fix the problem using other troubleshooting steps as provided below in this guide.

1. Make Sure AirPods Are Sufficiently Charged

The simplest reason for AirPods getting disconnected from iPhone is due to AirPods being low on power. Hence, make sure that your AirPods are sufficiently charged.

2. Restart Bluetooth

Restarting Bluetooth is known to help in fixing common Bluetooth connectivity issues.

1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth > disable Bluetooth by moving the slider to OFF position.

2. Wait for 30 seconds > enable Bluetooth by moving the Slider to ON position.

After restarting Bluetooth, you may find your AirPods working properly and not getting disconnected from iPhone.

3. Install Updates

The problem might be due an update waiting to be installed on your device.

1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

2. On the next screen, tap on Download and Install (in case software update is available).

4. Disable Automatic Ear Detection

If AirPods are disconnecting while they are being used, the problem might be due to the proximity sensors on your device not working properly.

1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth > tap on the (i) icon located next to your AirPods.

2. On the next screen, disable Automatic Ear Detection by moving the toggle to OFF position.

Note: You can enable Automatic Ear Detection after the issue is fixed.

5. Disconnect and Reconnect AirPods

Disconnecting AirPods from iPhone and connecting them back again is known to help in fixing AirPods connectivity issues.

1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth > tap on the i icon located next to your AirPods.

2. On the next screen, scroll down and select the Disconnect option.

3. Keep AirPods in the charging case and close the Lid.

4. After 60 seconds > Bring AirPods near iPhone and open the charging case.

Wait for AirPods to finish connecting and once they are connected, you should be able to start using them again.

6. Reset AirPods

If above steps did not help, follow the steps below to Reset AirPods.

1. Place AirPods in the Charging case and close the lid.

2. Wait for 60 seconds, and open the Lid of the charging case.

3. On your iPhone go to Settings > Bluetooth > tap on the i icon located next to your AirPods Name.

4. On the next screen, tap on Forget this Device option.

5. On the confirmation pop-up, tap on Forget Device to confirm.

6. With the Charging Case Lid open, press and hold the Setup button located at back of the case, until the status light flashes amber and then white.

7. After this, go to Settings > Bluetooth > and select your AirPods under “Devices’ section.

Wait for AirPods to finish connecting and once they are connected, you should be able to use them.
