How to Change Auto-Lock Time on iPhone and iPad

In case you find the screen of your iPhone or iPad turning off quite frequently, you can Change Auto-Lock Time on iPhone or iPad to make the screen of your device open or accessible for a longer period of time.

By default, iPhone will automatically turn off its display after a period of 1 minute, when it is left unlocked. This Auto-Lock feature on iPhone is designed to save battery life and to prevent others from accessing your unlocked iPhone.

However, this default behaviour in iPhone and iPad can be annoying, in case you are using your iPhone hands-free or trying to follow an instructional article.

In such situations, you can Change Auto-Lock time on iPhone to suit your own unique requirements, You can either increase the Auto-Lock duration or totally prevent your iPhone from shutting off.

Increase or Change Auto-Lock Time on iPhone

Follow the steps below to increase or change auto-lock time on iPhone.

1. Open Settings on your iPhone.

2. On the Settings screen, scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness option.

3. On the Display & Brightness screen, tap on Auto-Lock.

4. On the Auto-Lock Screen, you can select how long you want the screen of your iPhone to stay on.

As you can see in the image above, iPhone allows you to choose from 30 Seconds, 1 Minute, 2 Minutes, 3 Minutes, 4 Minutes, 5 Minutes or Never.

In case of an iPad, you can choose from 2 Minutes, 5 Minutes, 10 Minutes, 15 Minutes, or Never.

On both, iPhone and iPad, choosing the “Never” option will totally stop your iPhone from automatically shutting off its screen.

Auto-Lock Option Grayed Out on iPhone

The option to change Auto-Lock time on iPhone will be grayed out, in case your iPhone is in Low Power Mode.

This happens because, the Low Power Mode forces the Auto-Lock time on iPhone to remain at the lowest available time (30 seconds), so as to conserve battery life on your device.

In case the Auto-Lock Option is Grayed Out on your iPhone, you can either disable Low Power Mode on your iPhone or charge your iPhone, before trying to change the Auto-Lock Time on iPhone.

To disable Low Power Mode, tap on Settings > Battery > Disable Low Power Mode by moving the toggle to OFF Position (See image below).
