How to Email Large Files From iPhone Using Mail Drop

By: Sam Patwegar | February 18, 2025

The advantage of using the Mail app on iPhone is that it supports Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and other popular email clients and also allows you to bypass the maximum file attachment size restrictions placed by email service providers.

This can be achieved by the Mail Drop feature, which automatically kicks in, whenever the size of files being attached to an email originating from iPhone exceeds 20 MB, which is the maximum size allowed by most email service providers.

When files of large size are sent from iPhone using Mail Drop, the files are uploaded to Apple’s iCloud servers, where they remain available for download for a period of 30 days.

Mail Drop supports images, videos, presentation files and all other file types and allows the email recipients to download the attachments on any device.

Apple’s Mail Drop feature allows you to send large files of up to 5 GB size from iPhone, which is way larger than the maximum size (20 MB) allowed by most email service providers.

You can find below the steps to Email large files from iPhone using the Mail Drop feature, which automatically kicks-in, whenever you try to attach a large file to an email on iPhone.

1. Attach Large Files to Email on iPhone Using Mail Drop

As mentioned above, the Mail Drop feature is designed to automatically kick-in and there is really nothing required by the user to email large files using Mail Drop.

Hence, all that is required to Attach Large Files to any Email Message on iPhone is to compose the new email Message and attach the File to your Email Message. The Mail Drop option will be automatically triggered, if the size of the attached file starts to exceed 20 MB.

When recipients open your Email, they will see download links to attachments and will be able to download the attached files by tapping or clicking on the links.

If the attached files are images, your recipients will be able to see previews of the image attachments in the email message and other types of attachments will appear as links.
