By: Sam Patwegar | Updated: December 23, 2025

It is very common for users to delete email messages, only to realize (immediately or later) that they had made a mistake and those emails or a particular email message shouldn’t have been deleted.

Hence, the Mail App on iPhone comes with a built-in safety feature, which keeps deleted emails in the Trash Folder for a certain period of time, before removing permanently from your device.

If you have recently deleted a particular Email Message or certain Email Messages from iPhone, you have good chances of recovering them, as they should still be available in the Trash Folder.

Similar to other Email Apps, the Mail App on iPhone keeps deleted Emails in the Trash Folder for a period of 30 days and allows users to perform any of the following actions.

6. On the next screen, select the Inbox tab in your Email section (Gmail, Outlook, etc;) to move the deleted Emails back to the Inbox of your Email Account.

Things to Keep in Mind

While it is comforting to know that iPhone keeps deleted Email Messages in the Trash Folder for a period of 30 days, it is still recommended that you try to recover deleted messages as early as possible.

If you get complacent, you can easily lose track of the day on with the message was deleted, which can result in the Email Message that you want to recover being permanently removed from your device.

Recovering deleted Email Messages can be difficult, if there a large number of Email Messages in the Trash Folder, in which case you will have to go through all of them.

Hence, if you are conducting a large scale email cleanup action, it is a good idea to move important Email Messages to a separate Folder, before performing a mass delete action.
