In a typical case of No internet due to Self-assigned IP Address on Mac, your computer appears to be connected to Ethernet, WiFi or Airport network, but it is still unable to connect to the internet.

This problem occurs due to Mac assigning itself an IP Address which prevents it from connecting to the Internet.

Luckily, in most cases the problem of internet not working due to Self-assigned IP address on Mac can be fixed by using methods as provided below.

1. Power Cycle Modem/Router

Before going ahead with more complex methods, start by try this simple step which

1. Disconnect the Modem/Router from its source of Power Supply. You can either pull out the power cable from the wall socket or use the ON/OFF switch (if available).

2. Wait for 60 seconds

3. Connect the Modem/Router back to its Power Supply.

You should now see your Mac connecting to WiFi/Ethernet using a valid IP Address and internet should be now working on your device.

2. Renew DHCP Lease

If Mac appears to be connected to WiFi or Ethernet, but you are still unable to connect to internet, you should be able to fix the issue by renewing DHCP lease on your computer.

1. Click on Apple Logo in top menu-bar and select System Preferences… in the drop-down menu.

2. On System Preferences screen, click on the Network Icon.

3. On the Network screen, select Ethernet or WiFi in the side-menu and click on Advanced.

4. On the next screen, click onĀ TCP/IP tab and click on Renew DHCP Lease button.

5. Click on OK to save the revised settings.

After DHCP lease is renewed, see if you are able to connect to internet.

3. Delete PLIST Files

The problem of No Internet on Mac due to Self-assigned IP Address can be fixed by removing certain files related to network connectivity on your computer.

1. Click on the Finder Icon located in the taskbar of your Mac.

2. Next, click on the Go tab in top menu bar and select Go to Folder option in the drop-down menu

3. Type /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ and click on the Go button.

4. In System Configuration folder, right-click on the following files and move them to trash.

  • com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
  • com.apple.network.identification.plist
  • NetworkInterfaces.plist
  • Preferences.plist

Note: Your Mac should recreate above Files when it restarts.

5. Properly Shutdown the MacBook > Wait for a minute and Restart your Mac again.

After the Mac restarts, check to see if you are able to connect to Internet.

4. Create New Network Location

Another fix which is known to fix this issue is to create a a New Network Location and renew its DCHP lease.

1. Click on Apple Logo > System Preferences > Network icon.

2. On the network screen, open the Location menu and select Edit Locations option.

3. On the next screen, click on the Plus icon to Add New Location.

4. On the next screen, type a Name for the New Network Location and click on Done.

5. After creating new location, select either WiFi or Ethernet in the side menu and click on Advanced.

6. On the next screen, make sure you are on TCP/IP tab and click on Renew DHCP Lease.

7. Click on OK to save the new settings.

This should certainly fix the problem of No Internet due to Self-assigned IP address issue on your Mac.
