How Does Google Maps Provide Offline Navigation?
When you are using Google Maps in offline mode, it makes use of the built-in GPS and Accelerometer on iPhone to continuously track your location on the downloaded offline Map and provide you with driving directions.
- Downloaded Map: Contains vector information; which includes coordinates for roads, intersections, business and landmark locations.
- GPS Chip: The built-in GPS chip on iPhone works independent of the Wi-Fi or mobile network and it makes use of radio signals coming from at-least 4 satellites orbiting the earth to identify your exact latitude, longitude and altitude.
- Compass & Gyroscope: If the satellite signal weakens due to trees or tall buildings, iPhone makes use of its internal compass and gyroscope to detect which direction you are moving (turns & rotations)
- Accelerometer: The built-in accelerometer on the phone senses changes in speed (acceleration and braking).
The Google Maps App makes use of all this combined information to calculate and overlay your changing location on the downloaded Google Map in the form of a moving blue dot.
